Ghandi liked your Christ but not you

Gandhi liked your Christ but not you

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
Mohandas Gandhi

Unfortunately, it’s true. And I have to agree with Gandhi. I don’t like “your Christians” either for the most part. I’ve met my share of them and most of them have had a thing or two to say to me throughout my life about what kind of music I’m doing, what my lyrics should be saying, what I look like, what kind of people I’m trying to reach with my music or otherwise, and what organizations I’m allowed to do that in. I will never fit into your mold. I’m not here to pamper pew warmers or preach to the choir so you’ll think more highly of me. The open doors of opportunity I’ve had to speak with people NOT of faith and step into their “world” – the same world we all live in together – and really meet them where they are, not try to judge them or tell them what they need to change about themselves, but just love them first – the opportunities have been overflowing since I just said “yes, God, I’ll do that, even if it ruffles a few feathers.”

That’s what “being in the world but not of it” is all about. Not living behind stained glass windows and wishing the world well while sending them to hell. Isn’t changing them God’s job anyway? Yet the world thinks Christians are the most judgemental, selfrighteous jerks they’ve ever come across and have the same impression Gandhi did. You’re so wrapped up in your religion, in your do’s and don’ts, in your spiritual checklist of good deeds, in your appearances and “duty”, in your spiritual measuring stick you hold up to even those who are already in the Body of Christ. You tear apart those making a difference and doing the will of God that HE has led them to do, why? Because you don’t understand it You only see things one way. If your small mind can’t comprehend it, then you think there must be something wrong with it. You use scripture to back up your opinions and it’s so out of context. You make even Christians want nothing to do with church.

Just like the persecutors of Joan of Arc, you don’t think anybody could possibly hear from God unless it’s the way you agree with. Who made you God’s interpreter for everyone? The rot from your stomach is a foul stench they smell when you speak. You are more concerned with your outward appearance than the inside of you that is no place for the temple of God. There is no room for God inside of you because you’re so filled up with yourself. You think so highly of yourself for the religion you keep. And proudly gloat about how “the world has rejected you for Christ’s sake”. You point out the shortcomings of others to ease the guilty conscience for your secret sins. Be sure it will find you out.

I will always offend people like you. And you will always offend the lost.

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
Mohandas Gandhi

Better fix those feathers again.

2 Timothy 3:1-9 (The Message)

Don’t be naive. There are difficult times ahead. As the end approaches, people are going to be self-absorbed, money-hungry, self-promoting, stuck-up, profane, contemptuous of parents, crude, coarse, dog-eat-dog, unbending, slanderers, impulsively wild, savage, cynical, treacherous, ruthless, bloated windbags, addicted to lust, and allergic to God. They’ll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they’re animals. Stay clear of these people.

These are the kind of people who smooth-talk themselves into the homes of unstable and needy women and take advantage of them; women who, depressed by their sinfulness, take up with every new religious fad that calls itself “truth.” They get exploited every time and never really learn. These men are like those old Egyptian frauds Jannes and Jambres, who challenged Moses. They were rejects from the faith, twisted in their thinking, defying truth itself. But nothing will come of these latest impostors. Everyone will see through them, just as people saw through that Egyptian hoax.
